Enjoy safflower culture
Yama-dera Temple
Yama-dera Temple is said to have been founded in December 860 by the priest Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) on the orders of Emperor Seiwa. Changing with each season, the views of the bare mountain face with its fantastically shaped rocks are truly breathtaking.
Through its connection with Mt. Hiei, Yama-dera Temple drew merchants from Omi, accelerating development of the safflower trade.
