Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Yamagata City and the 300th anniversary of Matsuo Basho’s major work, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, the Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum was built as a wide-area cultural base in the Yamadera district, which has deep connections with The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
The museum has a Japanese-style one-floor structure whose exterior is in harmony with the Yamadera landscape.
Inside are displays of Basho’s handwritten manuscripts, as well as materials related to The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
