Risshaku-ji Chudo (Main Hall)

立石寺中堂

Yama-dera Temple’s Chudo (Main Hall) was rebuilt in 1356 by Shiba Kaneyori, the first lord of Yamagata Castle. Made of beech wood, the Chudo is the oldest temple building in Japan.
The temple is said to have drawn merchants from Omi, who developed the safflower trade together with local merchants.
At the Chudo, it is possible to see the “Eternal Light of Buddhism”, a ritual fire brought from Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei that continues to burn here.
